Reducing Poverty One Small Loan at a Time
Sometimes it’s the smallest assistance that can make the largest difference.
For a little more than three years, Mozaic Group Partners has participated proudly in a program that provides impoverished people around the globe with access to capital to start or grow a business and help lift them out of poverty.
The effort, which has been organized and operated by the non-profit organization Kiva since 2005, has connected more than 1.4 million lenders and almost $854 million in micro loans to poor people in 84 countries. Kiva’s mission is “to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.” Kiva makes it happen by gathering funds supplied by individuals and organizations like Mozaic and coordinating the loan disbursements with microfinance institutions on five continents to make loans as small as $25.
Through Mozaic’s two co-founders, Allan Mattson and Marlon Lucero, the company became a Kiva “lending team” in December 2012. The team has provided more than 125 micro loans totaling $3,500 to people running businesses in more than 30 countries, including many in Central and South America and Southeast Asia.
“Sometimes it’s a very small amount of money that someone needs to start or grow a business, but impoverishment and prohibitive access to funding from traditional institutions, raises financial barriers that prevents poor people from improving their lives. Kiva removes those barriers and bridges the funding gap with micro loans that supports people’s efforts to create better lives for themselves and their families. Kiva is a very worthwhile endeavor and we’re proud supporters,” says Allan Mattson.
